Retroactively recounting my 2003-2004 southeast Asia trip through photos. Stayed in Tokyo for a week, burning through my budget, taking pictures as a disengaged observer.
The first two shots are from Nikkō, a small town and temple in the hills of central Honshū, 140 km north of Tokyo.
I found Tokyo to be full of contrast: Tranquility to mania, such as the manipulated but peaceful Imperial Gardens surrounded by modern construction above.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but this was to be the summer of SARS.
Living quarters, exactly 2 cubic meters with radio, TV, and reading lamp for ¥ 5000 / night ($45) including a locker, robe, unlimited towels and use of saunas, pools, and baths. No shoes nor tattoos allowed.
As the luxuries of Tokyo were unaffordable to me, I found myself gazing at the local fauna (bird watching) below.
