Next month I’ll be starting intensive Danish classes from level zero (which is just a little above my current comprehension level). I expect it will be a bit draconian, but the word on the street is that it works. I’ll be alternating between four hours of class and four hours of homework daily. I’ll be expected to memorize fifteen sentences and repeat them flawlessly else I fail. Two failures at any time during a four week level commits me to retaking the entire level.
The rumour is that the system was designed by the American military for combat pilots. A pilot downed in enemy territory should be able to speak a few sentences such that the locals could not discern them from other locals. I don’t know if this is true, but I have little doubt about the military origins.
Anyway, I’ll be keeping notes religiously and thought it would not hurt to add some popup scripts to the mess. I may just modify scripts I wrote this summer.
